**In everyday life.** Two cars from different companies both have headlights. In one car, the switch is a lever next to the steering wheel. In the other, it is a dial on the dashboard. A driver who knows what headlights do finds the switch in either car.

**What you will learn.** Which differences change a setup step. Where to find each control on Claude and on ChatGPT, and what each free plan includes, when you need to look them up.

**Why it matters.** Each AI vendor gives the same controls its own names and places, and these change often. So this page shows the date it was checked.

Anthropic makes Claude, and OpenAI makes ChatGPT. Both offer the nine controls from 0.2.2, under different names,[^v1-claude-chatgpt-101] and each one does the same job on both. Chapter 2 teaches how to choose among the controls, and Chapter 8 teaches how to set up a workspace.

**The differences that change a setup step.** Three matter on your first day.

1. **Memory off for one saved chat.** On Claude, the "+" menu turns memory off for one chat, and the chat is still saved. On ChatGPT, an Unpersonalized temporary chat reads no memory, but it stays out of your history. So on ChatGPT, if you want a saved chat with memory off, turn memory off in Settings before you start.
2. **Code execution under other controls.** On Claude, Skills and Artifacts need code execution on, so check that setting first.
3. **What the free plans leave out.** Claude's Free plan has no Research, and ChatGPT's Free plan limits deep research and uploads. So Lab 0.2 uses two of ChatGPT's three uploads a day, and no research mode.

**The invariant.** The names, places and plans will change. The jobs stay the same: a file it answers from, code that calculates, a document you keep and a project that loads your files into every chat. Look for the job, and you will find the control on either AI vendor.

**For reference.**

> **Anthropic, as verified 16 October 2026.**
>
> Anyone 18 or older in a supported location can sign up at claude.ai.[^anthropic-pro-plan] The Free plan's usage limit resets every five hours.[^anthropic-get-started] Each "On the free plan" below comes from the pricing page.[^anthropic-pricing]
>
> - *New chat versus continuing.* A chat carries what came earlier in it.[^anthropic-usage] On the free plan: yes.
> - *Model picker and reasoning.* The model menu, next to the send button, as 0.1.4 shows. On the free plan: Haiku and Sonnet.
> - *Files and connectors.* Files from the "+" button, up to 20 a chat.[^anthropic-files] Each connector is turned on for a chat.[^anthropic-connectors] Gmail and Google Drive connectors are for all users.[^anthropic-google] On the free plan: yes, with one custom connector.
> - *Projects.* Open Projects, then "New project". Its files and instructions reach every chat in it, and it has its own memory.[^anthropic-projects] On the free plan: up to 5.
> - *Memory.* Settings > Memory. Off for one chat in the "+" menu, before the first message.[^anthropic-memory] On the free plan: on by default.
> - *Code Execution.* "Code execution and file creation", in Settings > Capabilities.[^anthropic-code] On the free plan: on by default.
> - *Artifacts.* The Artifacts tab. Artifacts need code execution on. Claude Docs is one kind.[^anthropic-artifacts] On the free plan: yes.
> - *Research mode.* "Research", in the "+" menu.[^anthropic-research] On the free plan: no.
> - *Skills.* Customize > Skills. Skills need code execution on.[^anthropic-skills] On the free plan: yes.
>
> *Training.* On Free, Pro and Max, Anthropic uses your chats to improve Claude if you allow it. The setting is in Settings > Privacy. Turning it off keeps new chats out of future training, and what training already used stays there.[^anthropic-privacy] Even with it off, a chat marked for a safety review, or a chat you rated, can be used.[^anthropic-training] With training on, chats may be kept for up to five years, without the details that identify you.[^anthropic-retention] As of 31 October 2026, Anthropic's plans page lists model training as "Opt-out" on Free, Pro, Max and Ultra, and as "None by default" on Team and Enterprise.[^anthropic-pricing-training] So a new account may start with it on. Look at yours before your first message.
>
> *Incognito chats,* Claude's temporary chats. You start one from the ghost icon in a new chat, outside a project. It is not saved to your history, not used for training, and does not use or add to memory. Anthropic keeps it for 30 days. Anthropic's page says that on an account with its new one-conversation experience, it opens in the older chat, where Claude can't create files or run code.[^anthropic-incognito] In a run on such an account on 3 November 2026, it did create a file. So try it on your own account before you rely on either. A chat you delete leaves your history at once. It leaves Anthropic's systems within 30 days, with some exceptions.[^anthropic-retention]

> **OpenAI, as verified 16 October 2026.**
>
> ChatGPT's free version is open to everyone, and each "On the free plan" below comes from its pricing page.[^openai-pricing] Free has unlimited everyday text chats, with separate limits for uploads and tools.[^openai-models-help] It allows 3 file uploads a day.[^openai-uploads]
>
> - *New chat versus continuing.* "New chat" starts fresh, and each chat keeps its own context.[^openai-faq] On the free plan: yes.
> - *Model picker and reasoning.* The model menu, as 0.1.4 shows. On the free plan: Think, for harder questions.
> - *Files and connectors.* Uploaded and created files are kept in Library.[^openai-library] Connectors are called apps, and you connect them in Settings > Plugins.[^openai-apps] On the free plan: 500 MB of Library. OpenAI's pages do not say which apps Free has.
> - *Projects.* Choose "New project". It holds chats, files and instructions, with default or project-only memory.[^openai-projects] On the free plan: 5 files a project.
> - *Memory.* Settings > Personalization > Memory. It can draw on past chats, Library files and apps such as Gmail.[^openai-memory] On the free plan: limited.
> - *Code Execution.* "Data analysis": Python on your uploaded files, with no web access.[^openai-data-analysis] On the free plan: limited.
> - *Artifacts.* Writing blocks and code blocks, inside the reply.[^openai-blocks] Canvas was retired from 28 May 2026.[^openai-release-notes] On the free plan: not stated by plan.
> - *Research mode.* "Deep research", in the "+" menu: a report with citations or source links.[^openai-deep-research] On the free plan: limited.
> - *Skills.* The Skills tab, under Plugins.[^openai-skills] On the free plan: no. The help page lists Business, Enterprise, Healthcare and Edu.
>
> *Training.* On plans for individuals, OpenAI may train its models on your content. You can stop this by turning off "Improve the model for everyone", in Settings > Data controls. Turning it off covers new chats.[^openai-data-controls] Even with it off, rating a reply with a thumbs up or down lets OpenAI train on that whole chat.[^openai-improve]
>
> *Temporary chats.* You select "Temporary" in a new chat, and choose Personalized or Unpersonalized before the first message. A temporary chat stays out of your history unless you save it, is not used for training and creates no memories. OpenAI may keep it for up to 30 days for safety. Unpersonalized also reads no memory or custom instructions. A temporary chat cannot be added to a project.[^openai-temporary] A chat you delete leaves your account at once. OpenAI deletes it from its systems within 30 days, unless it must keep it longer for security or legal reasons. Deleting a chat does not delete its file from Library.[^openai-retention]
>
> *Where chat sits.* This chapter uses ChatGPT's conversation for questions. The same conversation can take on longer tasks, and ChatGPT also has Space and dots. Chapters 1 and 2 show them.
