**In everyday life.** Two phones show the same text message in different fonts and bubbles. The words are the same on both. Each phone shows them in its own way.

**What you will learn.** How each AI vendor shows the marks, keeps a page and makes a web page. Which differences change what you do.

**Why it matters.** The marks are the same on both AI vendors. The buttons and settings around them have different names and places, and they change often. So this page shows the date it was checked.

> **Anthropic, as verified 16 October 2026.**
>
> *How replies are formatted.* You can ask for more formatting or less. Anthropic publishes the instructions its apps give each model, and Sonnet 5.5 is a model on the Free plan.[^anthropic-pricing] Its instructions say it may use bullet points and markdown when they make a reply easier to read. It answers simple questions in plain sentences. When you ask for less formatting, it stops using headings, lists and bold. Formatting preferences go in your user preferences.[^anthropic-sonnet-prompt]
>
> *A page you keep.* Ask for a Claude Doc, in plain words or with /docs. Docs are on every plan. You can export a Doc as Markdown (.md), Word, PDF or Google Docs.[^anthropic-docs]
>
> *A web page.* Claude builds it as an Artifact, an output kept on its own, beside the chat, and keeps it in the Artifacts tab.[^anthropic-artifacts]
>
> *Pieces that are not text.* Custom visuals, in beta, which means still being tested, for every user on the web and desktop apps: diagrams, charts and interactive visuals built inside the reply. A visual is not saved unless you copy it as an image, download it or save it as an Artifact.[^anthropic-visuals]

> **OpenAI, as verified 16 October 2026.**
>
> *How replies are formatted.* In Personalization, a setting called Headers & Lists lets you choose "Use more markdown" or "Use less markdown".[^openai-characteristics] On the web, Personalization > Layout and Visuals > Simple reduces visual and interactive pieces, but some may still appear.[^openai-intelligent-ui]
>
> *Seeing the marks.* Ask for the page in a code block. You can copy a code block's text, marks included.[^openai-blocks]
>
> *A page you keep.* Copy the code block, and save the text in a plain text file whose name ends in `.md`. A writing block, an editable draft inside a reply, can be copied, or saved to Library, where ChatGPT keeps your files, when that is available.[^openai-blocks] You can download a deep research report as Markdown, Word or PDF.[^openai-deep-research]
>
> *A web page.* Ask for an HTML page. HTML is the code that web pages are written in. The page comes in a code block, with a Preview.[^openai-blocks]
>
> *Pieces that are not text.* With Intelligent UI, GPT-6 builds replies from text, visuals and interactive pieces, such as buttons, forms and charts, on free and paid plans. It still gives plain text when that is most useful.[^openai-intelligent-ui]

**What neither AI vendor's help pages say**, as verified 16 October 2026: whether the copy button under a reply copies the finished page, the marks or plain text. Look at what you pasted.

**The differences that change a step.** Two matter when you keep or share a page.

1. **Where the web page opens.** On Claude, it is an Artifact beside the chat. On ChatGPT, it is HTML in a code block, and its Preview shows the page. So you open the Artifact on Claude and the Preview on ChatGPT.
2. **How the page becomes a file.** On Claude, a Doc can be exported as Markdown (.md). On ChatGPT, you copy a code block into a plain text file. Lab 0.3 copies the code block on both, so you save the file the same way on each.

**The invariant.** The buttons will move, and the names will change. The marks stay the same, so a page you keep has the same shape on either AI vendor, and in any app that reads plain text.
